This week the Axemen coaching staff will return for week two at both the Highlands and Jeb Stuart Middle Schools to continue the area Youth Rugby League Camps.
July 1st will see a number of the Axemen and Axe Maidens attend the summer picnic for area military families at Naval Station Jacksonville. Team members will help bring both a sporting and cultural exchange to the event and they will also help provide some games and stories to entertain the younger members that attend. Jacksonville has a large number of military personnel with both NAS Jacksonville and Mayport within the city limits. In addition to the incredible service they all provide by the nature of their profession they are also an invaluable demographic in so many ways for the city of Jacksonville. As Axemen spokesperson stated, "We have been invited to attend this event and the only word I can think of is Honored. As a small team that trys to operate in the most professional way we can, the fact that we have been asked to attend this event is huge for us. Our players put their bodies through some tough stuff in the name of a sport and to entertain our fans, but the military personnel we will get to interact with put their lives on the line on a daily basis just doing their job. It very quickly puts everything in perspective."
July 2nd will see the Axemen trade their boots for Wheelchairs when they accept the challenge from the Brooks Bandits Wheelchair Rugby Team. The Brooks rehabilitation team is a well organized group that provides a great option for contact sport for those with disabilities. The Axemen and the Axe Maidens are asking as many fans and supporters as possible to join them for this event that may see the first loss for the Axemen this season. Spinner Howland said, "I have seen these guys play and it is nothing short of pure athletic skill. I seriously doubt that our guys are going to put up much more than some defense for the bandits to play against. The skill they display and the speed and agility they have with their chairs is incredible. I will be happy if we can just score a few times."
