As of Monday afternoon the Axemen had reported that tickets had been sold to people in 36 different states and from 6 other countries. Although they had expected some from Canada, Australia and the UK, they have been surprised at ticket orders from Germany, Sweden and Portugal.
The Australia Day game between the South Sydney Rabbitohs from Australia (that is co owned by actor Russell Crowe and successful business man Peter Holmes a Court) and their UK equivalent, The Leeds Rhinos (who have been one of Rugby Leagues world powerhouse clubs for many years) will be an historic event in the sport.
Spinner Howland said,"Just like the NFL game that is being held in England this year will have national appeal to Americans, this Rugby League game will have the same appeal to Rugby League fans from Australia, England and all the other countries that play the sport at a national level. This is a huge day for the sport globally." He added that hosting such as event will mean that Jacksonville is securing its place in that Global outlook within the USA.
In addition to local interest the Axemen believe the game will be watched closely by the various controlling bodies from around the world. The event is going to help put the Axemen, the American National Rugby League (AMNRL) and the USA in general on the global map as a nation that has a Rugby League competition. With 10 teams currently competing at the national level, events like this will help lift the profile of the sport and allow for potential growth in the United States.
