Axemen Game Report: Round 8

The Firehouse Subs Jacksonville Axemen finished the regular season with a win over the Boston 13’s at Joe Moakley Park in South Boston. The game began with some tough Boston defense and the Axemen were unable to score until Josh Cock broke through at the corner. Gaz Walker quickly followed this up with a hard run and Jay Mombu scored another try for the Axemen. Rich Alleger was good for both conversion kicks making the score 12-0 with the Axemen up at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter the Axemen began to reach their stride with 5 tries scored by Nick Shea, Steven Hill, Gaz Walker, Akarika Dawn, and Brenden Beedle. Rich Alleger was good for 3 conversions and the Axemen lead 38-0 at halftime. The third quarter started off with an offload from Matt Thornton at the sideline leading to Akarika Dawn’s second try of the game, followed by Nick Shea and Steven Hill also scoring for the second time. With the Axemen up 56-0 going into the fourth quarter Nick Shea scored his third try of the game to make it a hat-trick for the former Boston native. The 13’s were determined to score and managed to put 6 points on the board with only minutes left in the game, but Brenden “Beedle Mania” was able to score one more try before the whistle blew making the final score 68-6. “It was a good way to finish the regular season and go into the playoffs,” says Captain and Coach Brent Shorten. “We started off slow but eventually found our rhythm and put the points on the scoreboard. The team looks forward to the weekend off to get a couple extra training sessions in and get stronger for the upcoming playoff game.” The Jacksonville Axemen will take on the Rhode Island Rebellion in the semi-final playoff game on Saturday August 10th.
