Axemen Ready to Defend USARL Championship Title

The Firehouse Subs Jacksonville Axemen have been working hard the past two weeks preparing for the USARL Championship game this weekend against the Philadelphia Fight. This will be the Axemen’s 4th National Championship appearance in 5 years, and has the potential to be the team’s third win and make the Axemen the first team to win back to back Championships. The Axemen have come a long way this season, having several changes to the roster after losing players last year and taking their first loss in Round 2 since 2011 to Philadelphia. Since that game the Axemen have steadily improved with each round and the players have adjusted to working together. Jacksonville avenged the loss when they won against Philadelphia in Jacksonville in Round 5 and evened the score with a much improved Axemen squad.

This should be an exciting match with both teams leaving everything on the field and Axemen Coach Brent Shorten is looking forward to the task. “We had a good weekend and trained well,” says Shorten. “It will be a tough game no doubt, but it’s a Grand Final so you expect that. Philly is good team and have been the team to beat all year. Playing them at their home ground is a big task and makes us underdogs but I know what we are capable of and so does the rest of the team. It will be a great finish to our 2013 season and we hope to bring home the cup again.”

General Manager Drew Slover reflects on the past year is confident in the Axemen defending their title. “This game is what we have been working towards ever since we returned from our win in 2012. There are a lot of people who work very hard to make this team successful and getting back to the Championships makes it all worth it. I have confidence that the Axemen have what it takes to bring our third National Championship back to Jacksonville.”

The Axemen will take on the Philadelphia Fight in the USARL Championship game at 3pm Saturday August 24 at A.A. Garthwaite Stadium in Conshohocken, PA.
