Jacksonville Axemen Rugby League

Game Report: Round 2

The 121 Financial Credit Union Jacksonville Axemen bounced back last weekend with a big win on the road over the Central Florida Warriors. The game was delayed about 30 minutes due to lightning in the area, but the after the skies cleared the Axemen came out of the locker room ready to go.

“We saw a massive improvement in attitude and desire and I’m hoping we get another increment this week,” said Coach Sean Rutgerson. “Defensively we started well and it set us up for the rest of the game. Our attack was much more organized with much better ball control. I am really happy with the way we responded after last weeks effort. As always, we need to be at our best for the first home game of the season.”

The Axemen were able to hold the Warriors to only two tries. Offensively, Jacksonville scored 9 tries: David Washington and Kevin Wathen both scoring three times each, as well as Sean Meehan, Pio Vatuvei, and Jonathan Halter adding more points to the board. Sam Dickey was good for 5 conversions kicks, boosting the final score to a 42-10 win. It was a total team effort in the wet and sloppy conditions.

The team returns home to Jacksonville for Round 3 in the first home game of the season against the Tampa Mayhem. Kick off is 5:30pm at the University of North Florida Practice Soccer field adjacent to Hodges Stadium. Gates open at 4:30pm with a curtain opener game with Jacksonville Touch Rugby. Full concessions and beer from Sweetwater Brewing will be available.
