Jacksonville Axemen Rugby League

Introducing Import Player Sam Dickey

Axemen fans may have noticed a new player at fullback this season, and the team is happy to introduce import player Sam Dickey.

Sam is originally from Hamilton, New Zealand, one of the bigger cities in the country that is surrounded by farmland. He is employed by the New Zealand Navy, and has played rugby league for over seven years for team including the Navy Dolphins, Glenfield Greyhounds, Navy Services Side, and the New Zealand Defense Force Team.

Some notable accomplishments include being selected for the New Zealand Defense team, in particular the ANZAC Centennial match against the Australian defense force, winning the Tri Nations Cup in Australia against the UK and Australian Navies, and winning the Inter-Service Tournaments in 2011 2012 against the New Zealand Army and Air Force.

“What I like most about playing rugby league is the comradeship you develop and the opportunities that the sport allows,” says Dickey. “I think the Jacksonville Axemen have a great location and I have enjoyed the passion for the sport from everyone involved with the team. I look forward to winning a Championship in Jacksonville.”

Axemen Coach Sean Rutgerson has been happy with Dickey as an addition to the team. “He brings experience to the team,” says Rutgerson, “and playing at fullback he organizes our defense as well as directs the team in attack. Sam is also safe at the back under a high ball and is a strong runner.”

Fans can catch Sam Dickey in action this weekend in Deland, FL when the Axemen travel to take on the Central Florida Warriors. Game time is 5pm at Spec Martin Stadium. The Axemen return home on June 17th for the first home game of the regular season. For more info check out the Axemen schedule on the tab above.
