Jacksonville Axemen Rugby League

Rutgerson Returns as Coach for 2017 Season

The Jacksonville Axemen are excited to officially announce that Sean Rutgerson has returned as Head Coach for the 2017 season. Rutgerson coached the team in 2009 and led the Axemen to their first National Championship appearance starting a trend of successful seasons for Jacksonville. He is also the Assistant Coach for the USA National Rugby League team, the USA Hawks, and is in the United States preparing the team for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Rutgerson has an impressive history in rugby league, playing professionally for the North Sydney Bears, Canberra Raiders, and the Salford City Reds. He played for South Africa in the 2000 Rugby League World Cup and has been working with the USA Hawks, US National Team, along with Head Coach Brian McDermott since 2015. After retiring from playing and becoming a personal trainer he has also coached with the Newtown Jets and the Wests Tigers NSW Cup Rugby League as Assistant Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coach.

“We couldn’t be happier to have Rutcho back in Jacksonville,” said Axemen Co-Owner and General Manager Drew Slover. “We know he brings a high level of expertise to the team and he already has the players conditioning for the upcoming season. Having him leading the team sets us up for another exciting summer of Axemen Rugby League.”

“I have always wanted to come back to the Axemen since coaching them in 2009,” said Rutgerson, “and now I have the opportunity to help not only the Axemen but help the USA National Team as well. The Axemen are looking strong this year and will be working hard on fitness so we can hopefully bring the Championship back to Jacksonville. We look forward to providing some great entertainment for Axemen fans this season.”
